What is Myopia?
Myopia, also known as nearsightedness, is a vision condition in which distant objects appear blurry. Myopia occurs when the eye grows too long from front to back, or when the cornea becomes too curved. It typically develops during childhood and adolescence, but it can also develop in adulthood.
How is Myopia Diagnosed?
A comprehensive eye exam uses tests to diagnose myopia, including checking how far away objects look through your vision versus what’s visible due to excessive effort or lack thereof on behalf of the patient; this helps tailor treatment options accordingly! The following tests used to diagnose myopia are visual acuity and retinoscopy.
Visual Acuity
The visual acuity test is used to find out how well you can see small letters. This will help in determining what type of glasses or contacts might work best for your eyesight.
Retinoscopy
A handheld instrument called a retinoscope projects a beam of light into the eye, this allows to see how the eye is focusing light.
The Rise of Myopia In Today’s Age
The rise of the digital world has exponentially led to vision problems, especially in children. Increased screen time on laptops and tablets has affected children’s visual development and increased myopia. Today, over 60% of the population requires vision correction to see clearly.
Myopia Control With Optical Academy
At Optical Academy, we understand that Myopia, or nearsightedness, can be a difficult condition to manage. That’s why we offer myopia management services to help you keep your vision healthy and clear. Myopia management is a treatment plan that includes the use of corrective lenses to slow the progression of myopia.
We use an exclusive feature for corrective lenses called Camolens. This feature eliminates white rings that are naturally present around normal lenses, enhances your frames, and overall conceals edges to create a crystal clear lens. This will mask the look of thick lenses having it thinned out and giving a fashionable and functional look.
If you or your child has been diagnosed with myopia, the first step is to schedule a Myopia Control consultation with our experienced eye care professionals at Optical Academy. We will develop a treatment plan that is tailored to your specific needs and goals. Myopia Control can help slow the progression of myopia and improve your quality of life.
Our Solution To End The Epidemic Of Myopia
Our goal is to provide every child with their first eye exam and eyeglasses in the comfort of their own school. If a child cannot see, they cannot learn. We aim to advocate for every student’s academic, social, & future success by giving access to their fundamental tool: their vision.
Difference Between Myopia Management & Prescribing Regular Glasses and Contact Lenses
Wearing single-vision glasses for people with myopia doesn’t slow the progression of this condition. However, it’s important to keep in mind this corrective eyewear will only result in clear vision and not prevent from becoming nearsighted later on down the road. Myopia Management includes an active measurement both between different prescriptions as well as axial length (the distance between where one focuses images) which helps optimize the treatment of this condition.
Types Of Myopia Management
Eyeglasses
Eyeglasses are the most common type of myopia management. They correct vision by bending the light that enters the eye so that it focuses properly on the retina. Bifocal and multifocal lenses have different lens power to enable clear vision. This reduces stress on your eyes from reading or other visual tasks and reduces myopia progression.
Contact Lenses
Contact lenses improve your vision at different distances. Bifocal and Multifocal contact lenses work similarly to eyeglasses but have the advantage of providing a wider visual field.
Atropine eye drops
Atropine eye drops are a medication that dilates your pupils. It can be used to slow down the progression of myopia. Although this medication does not correct vision, eyeglasses and contact lenses are still recommended.
Orthokeratology
Orthokeratology is the process of reshaping the cornea, which in turn allows for a clearer focus on objects up close and far away!
