(1/23/2017 – Clifton, NJ) — Optical Academy (OA) is excited to announce that Dr. Vitto Mena has joined the company as their Director of Sports Vision, reporting to the CEO of Optical Academy, Abby Ayoub. In this role, Dr. Mena will be responsible for leading the delivery of Optical Academy’s onsite eye care program and establishing a new sports vision program in support of the company’s focus on national growth expansion. Working directly with sports teams and schools, he will drive education about the importance of sports safety eyewear and enhancing the athlete’s performance on and off the field.
“At Optical Academy, good is never good enough. I joined the company to enhance my ability in helping others through our innovative approach to onsite eye care so they can excel in their school, their sports and their communities,” said Dr. Mena.
Dr. Mena, member of the American Optometric Association (AOA) and American Optometric Sports Vision/Contact Lens section, is a graduate of Pennsylvania College of Optometry (PCO) at Salus University where he focused on specialty contact lenses (scleral lenses) and sports vision. He has traveled internationally providing free eye care to the people of Haiti, served as the student-president of the New Jersey Society of Optometric Physicians (NJSOP) and was inducted into the Gold Key International Optometric Honor Society. In addition, he has worked with the New Jersey Special Olympics Opening Eyes and Lions Club International programs, which provides vision care to athletes and coaches, and provided vision care for a nationally known professional football organization.
“In the past few months we have deployed new innovations to continue our vision of changing the way eye care is delivered, nationally, for business worksites, government agencies, schools, communities and now, sports. Dr. Mena is a natural fit for our growing company and adding a sports vision program will help us serve athletes of all ages and help them achieve their full potential,” said Ayoub.
Eye injuries are the leading cause of blindness in children in the United States. School-aged children who participate in sports account for more than 100,000 physician visits each year, with costs in excess of $180 million. Protective eyewear and a proper vitamin regiment can help strengthen the athlete’s eyes and overall performance. Creating an integrated sports vision program will reduce more than 90% of sports related eye injuries including the use of safety glasses, goggles, contact lenses and eye guards designed for each specific sport.
